Cannabis edibles in Canada: gummies and drinks

Why edibles feel different

When you eat or drink cannabis, your body processes it differently than when you smoke or vape it. Edibles take longer to come on, the effects usually last longer, and a lot of people find the same amount of THC feels stronger as an edible.

That delay is where most edible stories go sideways. Nothing seems to happen, someone has another piece, and then both servings arrive at once. Patience is the whole game.

Start low, go slow

• Start with 2.5–5 mg of THC. Check the label for how much THC is in each piece or can, and portion from there.
• Wait at least 2 hours before having more. Set a timer if you need to.
• Don't mix with alcohol. Together, the two can hit much harder than either one alone.
• Plan your setting. Somewhere comfortable, with nowhere to drive and nothing urgent on the go.

Sharing with friends? Make sure everyone knows their dose and the two-hour rule before anyone starts, not halfway through the evening.

Gummies or drinks?

Gummies are compact, easy to split and simple to tuck into a bag. Drinks feel more social: something to sip slowly at a backyard get-together or a dinner with friends, in place of a beer or a glass of wine rather than next to one.

Either way, the dosing rules above stay the same. A drink isn't lighter just because it's a drink, and a gummy isn't weaker just because it's small.

Storing edibles safely

Keep edibles in their original packaging so the THC information stays with them, somewhere cool and dry. Store them well out of reach of kids and pets, ideally locked away, and never in the same spot as regular snacks or drinks. If you live with roommates, a clear label on the container saves everyone a surprise.
