Weed smalls in Canada: same plant, smaller price

Every cannabis plant grows big colas up top and smaller buds lower down, where less light reaches. Those lower buds are smalls, sometimes called popcorn nugs. They come from the same plants as the bigger buds; they're simply smaller.

Because they don't look as impressive in a jar, smalls are priced lower. That's the whole trick, and it's why they're such a smart buy if everything you smoke ends up in the grinder anyway.

A size, not a grade

Smalls aren't a lower grade, they're a different size. Big, photogenic nugs don't count for much once they've been ground, so smalls give you the flavour and character of a strain without paying extra for looks. Every batch is lab-tested, so a lower price doesn't mean cutting corners. Smalls come in indica, sativa and hybrid, so you can save on whichever type you prefer.

Picking indica, sativa or hybrid smalls

• Indica smalls: they break apart quickly by hand, which is handy for a bowl at the end of the night without a lot of prep.
• Sativa smalls: they grind fast and pack easily, so rolling a few joints before a weekend hangout is quick work.
• Hybrid smalls: a low-cost way to explore. Pick up two with different leans, compare them over a couple of weekends, and find your favourite.

Rolling, vaping and storing smalls

Smalls work well in joints, bowls and dry herb vaporizers, where small, even pieces heat up nicely. Grind to a medium consistency for a vape and a little finer for a joint.

Because small buds have more surface area for their size, they can lose moisture faster. Pop them into an airtight jar when they arrive and keep it somewhere cool and dark. Goo approves of smalls: small, round and full of character.
